Abstract

Prepn. of polyester filaments and fibres with a high moisture retention capacity consists in mixing the polyester before spinning with 3-3-0 wt.% of a water-soluble polyglycol ether and, after spinning, extracting the polyglycol ether by washing. The polyester is pref. polyethylene terephthalate and the polyglycol ether, in an amt. of 5-20 wt.% pref. has the formula R'O(AO)xR, (where A is 2-4C alkyl; R and R' are 1-12 (1-4)C alkyl; and X = 20-250 (40-130)). The alkyl gps. can also contain substits., inert to molten polyester, such as alkoxy, sulphonate or phosphonate. The process overcomes the low moisture retention capacity of normal polyester fibres, and hence their tendency to electrostatic charge generation.
