Abstract

The Parent Patent described formation in thermoplastic pipes of sockets with an internal annular channel by forcing into the preheated pipe end a suitably shaped mandrel with an annular collar which could be dismantled for subsequent removal. In this addn. preliminary shaping of the socket mouth is effected using an evacuated mould to enlarge a portion of the pipe and a temporary tubular sleeve to support the socket while the mandrel and collar are positioned coaxially within the socket. The sleeve is then withdrawn to allow the preheated oversize socket to contract to fit the mandrel. The mandrel is dismantled and withdrawn after the socket has been cooled sufficiently to retain its shape. Used esp. for putting socket mouths for use with annular seals on the ends of pipes of e.g. rigid PVC. Deformation of the pipe wall is uniform and free from longitudinal shear associated with force fitting of a core mandrel.
