Abstract

An open fire for burning wood has a grate (1) with a horizontal hearth. Small pieces of wood (m) are placed on this and burnt. A special rear grate (7) has widely spaced vertical bars and a semi-circular horizontal base (10) formed of equally widely spaced bars. These support large logs (M) in a vertical column. The heat from the burning small pieces (m) raises the surface of the large logs to a red heat which gives off radiation from an approximately vertical face in a horizontal direction. As a result the room is heated more effectively and less of the heat from the burning wood is lost up the chimney. The rear grate can be adjusted to vary the inclination of the radiating surface.
