Abstract

Cutting tool with high wear resistance, has a substrate of cemented carbide, and a hard, thin, adherent coating consisting of >=1 layer of titanium boronitride TiBxNy; where x is 0.05-0.08, and x + y = 1 to below 1.25. The TiBxNy has a face centered cubic structure with lattice parameter a = 4.24-4.28 angstroms. The layer is pref. 4-15 mu m thick, and its compsn. may vary so x is max. at the interface with the substrate and reduces continuously towards its outer surface. The layer may be covered by a layer of TiN, ZrN, HfN, VN,AlN, TiC, ZrC, HfC, VC, NbC, TaC, TiB2, ZrB2, VB2, NB2, NbB2, Al2O3, TiO, Si3N4, or SiON2. Tool wear is reduced when compared e.g. with a coating of TiN.
