Abstract
The sea-defence or quay-wall is constructed of modular cellular pre-formed blocks (1) which constitute the permanent formwork for a reinforced (3) concrete (6) sub-structure. The blocks are assembled and anchored by e.g. 'H' section piles (4). The reinforcement bars are then inserted and concrete finally poured to obtain a homogenous structure. The blocks (1) may be of a rectangular hollow horizontal section with transverse webs forming four similar vertical ducts, and may be laid in stretcher bonded courses to form a continuous wall barrier. Vertical reinforcing bars (3) pass through web-holes, and the ducts which receive the in situ concrete also receive the projecting heads of steel piles (4). Provision is made for horizontal anchor ties to hook onto the reinforcing bars, and high walls may use blocks of decreasing depth. In the latter case rear-face steps every three courses may effect the block depth transition.
