Abstract

Armchairs or sofas are made by assembling a supporting framework together with shaped arms or wings made of foamed plastic, e.g. expanded polystyrene, to be covered with a suitably attractive/durable cover. The moulded foam parts may be lined with a stiff sheet of e.g., wood or metal on the faces carried by the supports. The foam parts are pierced by passages which allow tie bolts to hold them on to the frame. Pref. the bolts are mounted in block or base set in recesses in the surface of the foam body so as not to spoil the profile of the external cover. The furniture is stronger than unreinforced structural shells of foamed resin. The framework or associated straps permit sections of upholstery covers to be secured in position by e.g., stapling thereto.
