Abstract

An open fireplace has a hearth on which wood is burnt. The smoke passes through an opening above the hearth into a chimney which is built on the back of a wall separating the room containing the fireplace from an adjacent room. The partition is made of refractory material. An air flue is built in the adjacent room backing the refractory partition. Air enters at low level and is discharged at high level. It is heated in the flue by heat transfer through the refractory partition. A water vessel built through the partition above the hearth is also heated by the fire. The fire thus provides direct heat, warm air heating and hot water.
