Abstract

Parent Patent describes the leaching of a sulphide ore or concentrate with an aq. soln. of CuCl2, for the selective dissolving of Cu, Pb, Zn, and noble metals leaving behind Fe and S. The improvement is that the ore or concentrate contains Pb, which is recovered from the soln. as PbCl2 crystals, which are then melted and reduced by hydrogen. Redn. is pref. at 750-850 degrees C., esp. using H2 which is diluted by an inert gas and injected into the molten PbCl2. Metallic lead with high purity can be obtd.; the Cl ions are recovered as HCl which is recycled; and the reducing agent employed is inexpensive.
