Abstract

Rapid extinction of fires is achieved with a silicate instead of using water. The silicate can be used to extinguish forest fires and fires caused by petroleum products. The fire will not spread or reignite and the silicate is dissolved by rain water and does not affect the soil fertility. Sodium silicate is esp. employed as a syrupy liquid and is sprayed on to the burning material and vitrifies due to the effect of the heat, Na silicate can be sprayed using existing techniques and, if necessary water can be added.
