Abstract

A C-steel contg. 10%C or an alloy steel, excepting stainless steel, contg. 10%Cr and 2%Mo is surface treated by immersing in an aq. soln. contg. an oxalate ion and a tungstate ion and opt. a borate ion, the amt. of the latter being 10% of that of the oxalate ion, and opt. 0.5-3.0g/l of Cl-. The surface coating provides a lubricating layer during cold working. It is thought that dissolved Fe reacts with the tungstate to give a hard and thick coating which adheres well to the substrate. Consequently the Fe concn. in the soln. does not increase and the amt. of Fe slime formed is reduced leading to increased life and stability of the soln. Borate ions retard the reaction and in combination with tungstate ions give a coherent, hard coating.
