Abstract

Low-density =3.2 g./cm.3) optical flint glasses (1.68 = ne =1.71; Abbe number 37 = Ve =41) contains (in wt.%) SiO2 40.0-45.0, B2O3 2.5-5.0, Li2O 1.0-5.0, Na2O3.0-8.0, CaCO 16.0-26.0, SrO 0-5.0, ZnO 1.0-10.5, TiO2 9.0-13.0, ZrO2 6.0-9.0, and Nb2O5 2.5-3.0. Li2O and/or Na2O can be replaced by K2O to 3 wt.%. The glass can be stabilised by addition of MgO and/or Al2O3 in an amt. is not >3 wt.%. The relatively high content of CaO and the absence of BaO results in a low density; this is of considerable advantage in some applications, e.g. spectacles. The low TiO2 content reduces the dispersion. There is no tendency to crystallisation.
