Abstract

The mountaineering ice axe can be used in ice or snow. The haft (1) fits into a socket and one side of the head is flat and spade-shaped (2), being parallel to the longitudinal plane of the axe head and 90 deg. to the shaft. The other side of the axe has a thin rectangular section blade (3), 90 deg. to the spade-shaped side. This blade tapers down to a blunt point (4). The front half of the blade is smooth and has teeth (5) underneath. The rear half has two projections (6) each side. These are wedge-shaped, solid with the head and pointing forwards.
