Abstract

A cathode compartment in an electrolytic cell for the regeneration of waste sulphochromic and/or phosphochromic solns. is described. The compartment is pref. a vertical parallelepiped open only at the top and consists of a solid support material chemically inert to the electrolyte and a good electrical insulator. In the support are cut-outs or windows fluid tightly equipped with occulation elements composed of a material with a very high resistance to oxidising and reducing agents in a highly acid medium and at temps. =110-120 degrees C a porosity of 0.02-50 mu, pref. 0.02-15 mu and an electrical resistance of 0.2 omhs/dm2 and a strength able to support a min. pressure difference of 0.2 kg/cm2. The electrolytic cell is used to regenerate solns. from Cr plating or pickling operations esp. etchants used in plastics plating processes. The compartment can have dimensions which vary within large limits and may be used in (dis)continuous processer. The components are easily mfrd. and replaced.
