Abstract

The pump plunger (14) cam ring (12) is displaced in order to vary the fuel injector timing by means of an engine speed dependent fuel lift pump pressure (19) acting on a spring loaded piston (25). The piston is moved against a returns spring force (26) only when the lift pump pressure exceeds a predetermined value. The lift pump pressure reaches the piston (25) and a connection via a restricted boring (34) in a second spring chamber (32) and the cam ring and cam ring adjuster bore (30). The pressure is insufficient at low speed to overcome the main spring (26) but overcomes the second spring (32) as pressure increases to retard the vary the injection timing.
