Abstract

Injectable compositions containing a suspension of trace elements insoluble in water, which are non-ionisable, and which are liberated slowly after intramuscular or subcutaneous injection by a moderated inflammatory process, esp. the free metals or their oxides, contain in addition an effective quantity of vitamin E (di - alpha - tocopheryl acetate). Used in treatment of disorders caused by trace element deficiency. Similar injections without vitamin E cause a painful inflammatory reaction esp. in cattle. The vitamin E prevents this. Typically the compositions contain metallic iron or manganese. In an example a composition contained 1000 mg metallic iron, particle size 44 microns, 3g tocopherol acetate, and purified olive oil to 10 ml. The dosage for 75-80 kg calves was 10 ml, and the animals showed no inflammation.
