Abstract

Two metal parts (a, b), esp. made of precious metals, are welded or brazed using a filler metal (c) with m.pt. lower than that of metals (a, b). Part (a) has a shank which is placed in a hole in part (b) providing a small amt. of play. Either the external surface of the shank or the bore of the hole is provided with a recess in which solid filler metal (c) is located. The filler is then melted to form a joint where the molten filler flows by capillary action into the narrow space between the shank and the hole, thus making the joint. Metal (c) is pref. melted in a neutral or reducing atmos. Part (a) is pref. a bezel, with claws holding a precious stone and a shank; and numerous alternative designs are illustrated. The brazing metal does pref. not flow onto the bezel, or only to a very slight extent.
