Abstract

The double lip bearing seal (10) has a cylindrical central position provided with three internal ribs (40, 42). The lips are formed by radial flanges (34) (22) which press against the opposite surfaces of the fixed rings (28). A reinforcing ring (44) increases the radial pressure of the seal on the shaft and resists centrifugal force at high speed. Because the sealing lips press on each side of the fixed ring (28) the resultant axial force on the seal is zero so there is no tendency for the seal to move along the shaft. Seals of this type have prevented any oil leaks after 500 hours' exposure to an atmosphere containing a mixture of sand and cement.
