Abstract

Hydroxy-betaines of formula R'-CH(OH)-CHR2-N+R3R4-R5-COO- (I) (where R1 is alkyl; R2 is H or alkyl and R1 and R2 together contain 12-18C; R3 and R4 are 1-5C alkyl or hydroxyalkyl and R5 is 1-2C alkylene) are used in aq. or aq. alcoholic soln. for antistatic finishing of synthetic fibre material. (I) have high antistatic activity and substantivity for synthetic fibre material. In an example, 0.5% (I where R1 contains 10-12C ; R2 = H; R3 = R4 = Me, R5 = -CH2-) reduced fieed decay half life from >60 to 1.2 secs. at RH 65%, 20 degrees C, on polyamide fabrics.
