Abstract

An electrical contact-breaker has an arc blow-out chamber with chicane. Part of the contact-breaker has a moving contact (13) and a fixed contact (12). On release, an electric arc (221) is produced. Chicane panelling (15,...21) is used to facilitate blow-out of the arc (221). One of the panels (15) of the chicane is part of the fixed contact (12). Two (18, 21) of the panels are covered with an insulating material layer. Only part of the panels are covered with the insulating layer so that arc blow-out is carried out on the uncovered part of the panels (18, 21). The insulating layer may be either dielectric paper, insulating board or sheet or fibres of asbestos.
