Abstract
The thermally-compensated hydrostatic seal is for use in pumpbs between the rotary driving shaft and the housing, using regulated leakage of the fluid pumped to lubricate the sealing faces. A ring on the shaft has a sealing face working against a mating one on a bush sliding in the housing, a path allowing limited leakage being formed between them. The bush (56) has a compensating ring (54) heat-shrunk onto one end, and of material having a different coefficient of thermal expansion to that of the bush. As pump temperature rises, the bush is caused to distort by the ring, increasing the angle of opening of the gap (50) between it and the shaft ring (24) at low fluid temperatures, and decreasing it at high temperatures.
