Abstract

Automatic sampler comprising a reversible peristaltic pump which sucks up the sample through a tube which can be about 5m-long, terminating in a strainer. The samples are delivered through a moveable nozzle into fixed collecting vessels which may have a volume of several litres. They are taken either at predetermined time intervals controlled by an integral timer or at the instigation of external stimuli. The pipe bringing the sample is cleaned after each sample by reversal of the circulation under the control of the control unit. The sample vessels are contained in a heat-insulated housing to maintain the physical condition of the sample. The whole assembly is enclosed in an airtight box. The electronic control unit can exchange the vol. of the samples, the number of samples per hr. or can allow the samples to be controlled manually. Appts. allows sampling to continue without the presence of an operator. The samples can be of much greater vol. than in the standard laboratory sampling equipment. Further as the collecting vessels are stationary, they may be much larger than the analysis tubes generally used. As the collecting vessels are insulated the conditions of the samples can be controlled thus giving a valid sample. It is also possible to take samples in asceptic conditions. The sampling unit can easily be introduced into pipes etc. and can be used in places were manual sampling would be impossible. The electric power for the unit is supplied by rechargeable batteries so that the unit is autonomous.
