Abstract

The teleprinter has an inked ribbon printing characters on the paper. This is stored on two spools and is alternately wound on and off each. The paper passes over end rollers and is tensioned by spring loaded shoes pressing it against the rollers. Each end of the ribbon passes through a fork operating a microswitch. To reverse its movement, a metal eyelet in its surface contacts the relevant fork. This actuates the microswitch and reverses a stepping motor driving a pinion. This pinion drives the spools ad switches between them in response to the change in direction of the motor.
