Abstract

Synthetic feldspars are prepd. by mixing a thermally activated kaolin and a conc. soln. of metal hydroxide under conditions which give a reaction mixt. in the form of a semi-dry powder, which is prevented from heating. The reaction mixt. is then compressed mechanically, the compression being maintained during the start of, and throughout, the exothermic reaction, the temp. increased to >=100 degrees C. Pref. the process can be accelerated by initially heating the compressed reaction mixt. to >=50 degrees C to initiate the exothermic reaction. If the metal hydroxide is NaOH, a hydrated feldspar is obtained which is like a synthetic zeolite type A. The speed of the reaction is high and the process can be used both to make synthetic feldspars comparable to those obtained by the much slower digestion and crystallisation techniques.
