Abstract

A process and a plant installation for producing drinking water by the desalination of sea water. The system is of the type in which sea water is pre-filtered in a low pressure (L.P) circuit and then pumped at high pressure (H.P) to a reverse osmosis module comprising semipermeable hollow fibres. The complete process comprises the following essentials: (a) fine filtration, pref. to about 5 mu in the L.P circuit. (b) at the start of each process run. The H.P circuit is flushed out by running product water to waste for a brief period; at the same time the L.P. circuit up to the prefilter inlet is pumped thro. with sea water (c) at the end of each run, the H.P circuit is thoroughly rinsed with pre-processed drinking water so that no sea water is left in the module (d) periodic regeneration of the H.P. circuit by flushing with a soln. contg. e.g. detergents, descaling agents. The sequence of operations is followed automatically apart from start up and regeneration. Used for prod. of drinking water from sea water. The installation is partic. suitable for sea-going vessels. Start up flushing of the H.P. circuit removes residual rinse water which is a source of bacteria. Rinsing the module at the end of each run prolongs its useful life.
