Abstract

The resin can be mixed at lower temp. with e.g. polystyrene, stabilisers or reinforcing agents. The resin has the formula (where n is an integer, and Q is H, halogen, hydrocarbon(oxy) or halohydrocarbon(oxy) with not 2C between the halogen and the phenyl nucleus). The pref. resin is poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene ether). The cpds. to be mixed with the resin are pref. (substd.) o- or p-toluene sulphonamide, alkyl esters of trimellitic acid, chlorinated diphenyl, hydrogenated terphenyl, epoxy stearates, epoxy tetrahydrophthalates, epoxidised oils, mineral oils, phosphate softeners and phthalate softeners. In partic., the phosphate is of formula O=P(OX)3 (where Z is (cyclo)alkyl, (alk)aryl, aralkyl, hydroxyalkyl or -aryl, hydroxyalkaryl, halogen or H; and 1Z gp. is aryl). The phosphates are pref. crestk diphenyl, 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl, tricresyl, triphenyl, and/orisopropyl triphenyl phosphates. The phthalates have formula (where R9 and R'o are (cyclo)alkyl, (alk)-aryl, aralkyl, hydroxyalkyl or -aryl, or hydroxyalkaryl). Pref. phthalates are dibenzyl, phenyl cresyl, di(m)ethyl; dibutyl, butyl octyl, diisononyl and ditridecyl phthalates. The additive is pref. used as a liquid, either as a soln. or a melt. Solvents are lower alkanols, acetone, diethyl ether, pentane, hexane or tetrahydrofuran.
