Abstract

A location scale (1) is placed on the fixed element parallel to the path of the mobile element (2) and on at least part of the fixed element containing the position to be located, this location scale comprising a series of transparent bands A0, A1, A2...An of equal width b and separated by equal intervals. The device has a position reader which moves with the mobile element and contains a light detector and a mask on which is a series of slits A10, A11,....A1n separated by the same intervals. When this mask moves along the scale, at any moment, more than k bands of the location scale are superimposed on k slits, k being much less than n. The intensity of light passing through the bands and the slits measured and a locations signal is derived which contains a high amplitude pulse at the position of super-position.
