Abstract

Machine comprises a horizontal, cylindrical, rotary drum having twin, internal, helical scrolls. The scrolls form two series of conveying cells which carry the solids axially through the drum, counter-current to the liq. At the solids infeed end of drum, each inter-scroll cell is enlarged with a liq. accumulating chamber formed on the exterior of the drum circumference. Each liq. accumulating chamber is pref. formed as a convex pocket on the outside of the cell with which it communicates via baffles extending into the cell and inclined in the opposite direction to that in which the drum rotates. Liq. is pref. drawn off as its temp. drops below that suitable for extraction and is replaced with hotter liq. The liq. accumulating chambers serve as reservoirs of liq. so that a continuous feed of solids becomes soaked in a completely homogenous fashion immediately on entering the drum. This improves extraction efficiency.
