Abstract

The device described measures the viscosity of a liquid by determining the time taken for a predetermined quantity of liquid to flow through a calibrated orifice. The device includes a container (10) whose base has the calibrated orifice (12) plus a filling orifice (14) fitted to it. Two or more level detectors (22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32) are placed at different heights within the container (10). These detectors comprise a light source and a photocell which is illuminated only in the absence of liquid. The detectors are connected to an electronic circuit which triggers timer when the upper cell is illuminated and stops the timer when the lower cell is illuminated. Thus, the flow items between the two levels is determined. The filling orifice is controlled by an electro-valve (10).
