Abstract

A fuel pump with an integral filter (2) has a by-pass which opens when the contaminated filter causes the fuel pressure to raise. The bypass valve has a tapered washer (9) which normally closes the bypass path (6, 7) with its inside and outside edges. When the fuel pressure increases to a certain value, the axial force so produced on the valve ring (9) moves the tapered washer into its second stable position by an axial toggle action. The bypass thus opens and remains open even if the fuel pressure returns to its normal value.
