Abstract

The intermediate part which is not embrittled by the high welding temp. nor by the rapid cooling necessary to obtain welding temp. nor by the rapid cooling necessary to obtain the austenitic steel is a low C, high alloy steel contg. 15-18% Ni. this steel is cast onto the end of the Mn steel before rapid quenching is carried out. The free end of the intermediate part is then welded to the part to which Mn steel is to be connected. Fishplate connexions are no longer necessary when joining railway rails. Embrittlement produced by the high temp. and rapid cooling rates is eliminated.
