Abstract
Nuclear reactor, having a core, formed by a series of fuel assemblies and of mobile cruciform control rods with four arms, installed within a pressure vessel, is provided with a lower grid fixed to the vessel. A series of casings or housings are fixed to this grid so as to be capable of being dismantled by remote control. Each casing contains at least one fuel assembly suspended at its upper end from the casing. The casing has a rectangular parallelepipedic shape with four vertical walls joined to each other, an open top and a base closed by a rectangular plate with an aperture. The reactor is provided with means for supporting the fuel assemblies and casings. The method for the dismantlable fixing of each casing on the lower grid consists of a sleeve fixed to and projecting above the upper face of the grid. The sleeve is fabricated in a material with a coefficient of thermal expansion above that used for the base plate of the casing. The external dia. of the sleeve when cold is less than that of the aperture in the casing base plate, but equals it at the reactor operating temp. so that the play between these two elements is taken up by thermal expansion. Design provides a core structure which meets most of the desirable requirements such as the separation of the functions to be fulfilled by the core in such a way as to be able to deal easily with such function each time the core is rearranged. These functions include prodn. of neutrons, control of core reactivity by fixed (i.e. consumable poisons) or mobile absorbents, e.g. control rods, mechanical cohesion of the fuel assemblies and reduction in the demand for zircalloy in the core structure.
