Abstract

The appts. is for heat exchange between two flows of granular powdered or coloidal material suspended in liqs. in the form of pulp. One of the flows is effected inside tubes arranged parallel in a bundle terminating of transverse tube plates, surrounded by a shell. The second flow passes through a second series of tubes parallel to the first series, alternating regularly with them, and the space between the tubes and the shell is filled with a metal or alloy (esp. Al) in the solid state. The appts. is esp. used for treating a pulp of calcium sulphate dihydrate at 120 degrees C so that it is transformed into a pulp of calcium sulphate hemihydrate. No dead flow zones occur in tubes as when one set of tubs is enclosed in the outer cylinder through which the second liquid is flowed. Hence pulp and slurries can be used for heat exchange without blockages.
