Abstract

The rigid part of the bumper is of steel in a widened W section, i.e., a pair of V sections joined at the top by a flat bar. The springy strip is of plastic (polyamide, PVC or rubber) and is of U section; it fits in the widened central section of the W. The U section is held open by a spring strip (of plastic or steel) between the ends of the arms of the U. This makes it fill all the available space between the V's of the W, so that normally it rests at the outer end, where it is held in place by its rims catching against clips put round these V's. Impact or pressure on the central section makes the U close up, narrowing its open end: it slides down into the W, to return when the constraint is removed.
