Abstract

The engine block (M), with cylinder head attached, arrives by overhead conveyor (C) on the machine bed (1). It is adjusted (1a, 1b, 1c) into alignment with the machine head (2), mounted on inclined slideways (3, 4). The head spindles (5) engage (6) over the cylinder head bolts (V) and hydraulic motors (7) loosen these. The same spindles then tighten the bolts to a pre-set initial tension. At this point a predetermined additional angular valve is given to each bolt. Each spindle is controlled by a strain gauge (12) flexible mounted (11) between motor and machine head (8). A stepping motor (14, 15, 16) provides the angular control. These are computed electronically (18) and the block automatically stamped (22), if good.
