Abstract

Print detectable by blind persons is produced by printing the required (Braille) patterns on to a microporous plastic coating on a suitable (paper) support and then heat-treating the surface to cause local expansion of the printed zones to create patterns of raised relief. The print pattern can be rapidly reproduced for economic printing of books. Different texts may be applied to opposite faces of the same page (unlike use of embossed patterns). The degree of local expansion may be adjusted by varying the relative darkness of the printed pattern and hence heat absorption.
