Abstract

A tool for deep-drawing, moulding, extrusion etc., consists of a punch and die or other forming tools, where a positive or negative pattern of plastic, wood or wax etc. is coated with stripper and then hot sprayed with a layer of low m.pt. metal or alloy, followed by hot spraying with a wear-resistant layer on another metal or alloy. The tool is manufactured using a heat resisting plastic support baked onto a layer and the pattern removed, followed by baking support which now retains the layer; the low m.pt. metal or alloy layer is coated with the wear-resistant layer and then a plastic support is built up on the wear-resistant layer, followed by heating to melt layer and remove support, leaving a tool with a shape matching the pattern. The wear-resistant layer is pref. steel, carbide or oxide. Inexpensive tools can be made for experiments or small prodn. batches with a layer of 2-5 mm of steel, carbide or oxide forming an accurate tool profile on a plastic support reinforced e.g. with SiC, or steel or carbon fibres underneath layer.
