Abstract

Prodn. of mineral binders esp. Portland cement by subjecting a sufficiently thin layer of raw materials on a conveyor to ionising irradiation is improved in that the intensity of the irradiation is at least 1 Mrad/sec. The starting mixt. is pref. preliminarily heated to a temp. =600 degrees C. gamma-radiation or electron beams are used. No combustible fuel is used. the process is sufficiently intensive to be conducted on the industrial scale. The conversion is very rapid (a few secs). There is no need to work under vacuum. There is no contamination of the surrounding atmos. by combustion gases and dust. Apart from Portland cement, other mineral binders can be produced, such as alumina cement, gypsum, lime, magnesia, dolomite binders etc.
