Abstract

The semi-coking of coal or lignite is carried out by (a) mixing coal dust with part of the hot combustion gases from the subsequent combustion of the semi-coke; (b) separating the resulting semi-coke from the gas phase; and (c) purifying the gas phase, comprising a mixt. of combustion gases and semi-coking gas, to separate liq. products and remove H2S. The process can be used to supply steam boilers in energy generating installations, etc., with semi-coke while simultaneously producing useful liq. by-products (tar hydrocarbons) and minimising the emission of S cpds. into the atmosphere.
