Abstract

New treatment process for tubes, made in copper or its alloys, after drawing in the presence of a lubricant, the treatment being designed to eliminate the formation of carbon deposits adhering to the bore of the tubes due to decompsn. of the lubricant during the annealing treatment. The novelty is that the tube is heated to a temp. providing an adequate vapour pressure from the lubricant and a gas is fed through the tube t remove the vapour. The flow of gas is pref. employed during the entire annealing cycle, using a weak reducing gas or an inert gas, esp. N2, CO2, steam or their mixt. to obtain a residual carbon deposit of max. 0.5 mg/dm2 and generally below 0.15 mg/dm2 in the bore. Process is useful for example, in domestic sanitary piping where pitting corrosion is promoted by carbon deposits, or in other applications.
