Abstract
In the mfr. of an optical fibre using a round quartz tube, a vapour mixt. is formed from O2, SiCl4, a dopant and a flux and fed through the tube which is zone heated to form a deposit adjacent to the moving hot zone; the deposit is then melted to form a layer in which the dopant produces a higher refractive index (R2) than that of the tube, the flux lowering the m.pt. of the layer; the process is repeated to form several layers and the tube is then heated above its softening point so it collapses, forming a bar which is drawn into an optical fibre. The amt. of dopant is pref. altered to form a sequence of layers with progressively increasing RI. Used of fibres with low attenuation due to a substantial redn. in scattering centres and Rayleigh scattering.
