Abstract

Flame resistant and noncorrosive rigid plastic foam is obtd. by copolymerisation in all proportions of a phenolic resin and urea formaldehyde resin, in the presence of a blowing agent (e.g. Freon or other initially gaseous, liquid or solid blowing agent) and a weak catalyst such as used for UF resin e.g. NH4 salts but which does not cause polymerisation of phenolic resins (i.e. excluding pure acids as catalysts). Pref. compsn. comprises 25-75 pref. 50 wt. % phenolic resin, 75-25 pref. 50 wt. % UF resin (as 65% aqs, soln) 10-20% Freon II opt. with Freon 113 and pentane, and 3-10 pref. 3-8% NH4 salts e.g. phosphate, chloride or nitrate. Pref. 2-12% glycerine is added as pore regulator, opt. with a silicone. Used to make expansion joints, sheaths, tubes, preimpregnated materials etc.
