Abstract
Electrolytic cell for F2 prodn. contains bipolar electrode(s) with the mono-polar electrodes connected to a D.C. power source. The electrolyte consists of an anhydrous mixture of mineral fluorides with HF. This can be a mixture of NH4F and HF, or up to 80% of the molecular content of NH4F can be replaced mole for mole by an alkaline fluoride e.g. KF. The proportions of HF is varied according to the relative amount of KF and NH4F in the mixture. The bipolar electrodes are made from carbon or metal or can be a composite of carbon or metal. The walls are made from an insulating material and are in contact with the electrolyte and the gases separated from it. This can be a plastic e.g. polymethyl -acrylate, polycarbonate, fluoro-hydrocarbon, (e.g. (PTFE) or a chloro-fluoro-hydrocarbon (e.g. (PTFCE) or polypropylene and polyethylene. For the prodn. of F2 e.g. for use in U purification. Existing cells involve danger of contaminationofH2 and F2 to give explosive mixtures, also the corrosive attack of the cells. The cell overcomes or avoids these problems and reduces the contamination of the F2 produced with H2 and HF.
