Abstract

Process is provided for manipulating a moulding box after csting, where the box consists of a cope and a drag contg. moulding sand and the casting. The box is placed on a bed and the cope lifted off the drag and removed; the drag is then lifted off the bed. A pair of clamping jaws are used which can be opened or closed and are mounted on a head which can be rotated, the head being located on the end of a jib hoist. The clamping jaws are equipped with devices for rotating the drag through 180 degrees so it is the right way up when it is returned to the moulding station. The pref. manipulator uses a servomotor to rotate the clamp head and hydraulic jacks and motors for the various motions required. The operations of knocking out the casting and returning the copes and drags to the moulding shop can be remotely controlled by a worker sitting in an armchair in a cab which is not exposed to the heat, dust and noise in the foundry knock-out zone.
