Abstract

A portable testing instrument for controlling the fermentation process of a batch of compost or household rubbish for disposal is new. The instrument provides readings of temp. and moisture content within a batch and the readings can be fed to a comparator comprising a programmed calculator which compares the readings with values taken from a process optimisation curve. The instrument comprises probes which are inserted into a batch and are fitted with temp. and moisture content detectors which can give a numerical display reading on a panel mounting integral with the probes. The comparator can give an automatic warning if temp. or moisture content deviate from preset limits related to the optimisation curve. Used for controlling a fermentation process for compost prodn. or disposal of rubbish. Appts. can ensure automatically that the whole of a batch has been properly treated, indicating when aeration, turning, wetting, additives etc. are required.
