Abstract

The fuel cell uses gasses as the two combining fuel components. The cell arrangement is such as to minimise crystallation in the grids of the electrodes and hence reduce the loss of active area. The basic cell (1) is divided vertically into three distinct compartments by two electrodes (2, 3). The central compartment is fed by an electrolyte in liquid form such as KOH solution similarly one side compartment is fed by one of the fuel components, normally hydrogen. The remaining compartment is fed with air or with pure oxygen. The electrolyte compartment is fed from a reservoir (12) mounted above the cell relying on gravity feed. Each of the fuel compartments is fed from reservoirs partly filled with water.
