Abstract

The flats of a carding engine, attached to a pair of chains at their ends by headstocks, and guided by skates in slides curved so as to form with the carding cylinder, a carding gap following an arc of a circle, comprise a supporting section of cast iron, having on one surface a layer of card clothing, and contoured on the other to form an anchorage for a profiled, box-section reinforcement rail of sheet metal folded into an inverted "U" with inwardly inclined free edges. Alternatively, the supporting detail may be a strip of metal to which, the outwards and upwards inclined flanges of the reinforcing profile are welded. The design of the cover formed by the flats is improved particularly as regards resistance to bending strain, esp. in the vertical direction, and with lighter weight. Friction, as the flats move in the slides is reduced.
