Abstract
In the continuous prepn. of tert. butyl chloride (I) by hydrochlorinating the isobutene in butene fractions from pyrolysis with anhydrous HCl, the improvement is that reaction is effected in (I) as solvent at -25 to +50 degrees C, at or below atmos. pressure, opt. in presence of metal chloride catalysts (e.g. ZnCl2, HgCl2, SbCl5, FeCl3 or AlCl3). Avoids disadvantages of other isobutene hydrochlorination methods (i.e. high acid consumption and corrosion using conc. HCl, very low temps. for liq. phase methods, in the gas phase, isomerisation and low selectivity at high temp. and slow reaction at moderate temp, high catalyst consumption and low conversion; need for futher purificn. if solvents are used; use of high pressure), and alos disadvantages of other methods (e.g. expensive chlorinating agents or starting materials; low yields).
