Abstract
Isobutylene is recovered from 4C hydrocarbon fractions by (1) heating the fraction with water in a mol. ratio 1:5 to 1:20 at 70-110 degrees C and 16-23 atmos. in the presence of a catalyst and a polar solvent present in amts. of 10-70% on wt. of water, to form a reaction mixt. contg. tert. butanol and water; (2) recovering the tert, butanol as an aq. soln. and (3) subjecting the soln. to catalytic dehydration of the tert. butanol at 80-110 degrees C under a pressure of >3 atmos. whereby the catalyst used in stages (1) and (3) is a formed ion exchange catalyst consisting of a 1-4:1-2 mixt. of a sulphonated styrene-divinyl benzene copolymer and a sulphonated thermoplastic matl. The catalyst has high activity (1.5-2 fold that of sulphonic acid exchangers), good heat resistance (4000-4500 hrs working life at 85-100 degrees C) and gives improved process output cf. known sulphonic acid exchanger catalysts.
