Abstract

Refractory protective system for cooled tubes in a reheating furnace for large pieces of metal, e.g. ingots, blooms slabs, comprises, for each section of tube, >=2 semi-cylindrical refractory pieces which take the shape of the tube, one part above, the other below and covering the major part of the circumference of the tube. Near the upper longitudinal edge, and parallel to the axis, each refractory piece presents, on the surface facing the tube, >=1 opening through which metallic supports pass, around which further refractory material is provided as part of the refractory piece. The design is more effective in protecting the supporting pieces attached to the tube than prior art designs and is amenable to easy installation, maintenance and replacement.
