Abstract
A dialyser is housed in a vessel within the framework of an assembly. Connected to the dialyser housing by inlet and outlet tubing is a circulation pump which circulates both dialysing solution and sterilising soln. The dialysing soln. and the sterilising fluid are fed into the suction tubing of the pump through a separate supply pipe connected to external sources of the fluids. Also connected to the dialyser are inlet and outlet tubes for the blood supply and return. Leading to a catch pot from the dialyser housing are separate lines for the discharge of the dialysing soln. and sterilising fluid and for draining the housing. This catch pot is on the suction of a pump for discharging the fluids. Connected to the discharge side of the circulating pump is another tube which can be temporarily connected to the blood supply tube to the dialyser. Another line attached to the catch pot can be temporarily connected to the blood return line from the dialyser. On the line connecting into the blood supply pipe is a solenoid valve which is opened when sterilising fluid is to be circulated through the blood passage side of the dialyser. The drain line between dialyser housing and catch pot also has a solenoid valve so that the discharge pump draws. soln. through the dialyser housing and catch pot when this valve is closed. For sterilising dialysers after they have been used for treating a subject's blood. The dialyser can be stored under sterilising soln. and used again for the same subject. Only dialysers that are to be thrown away have to be handled in the non-sterilised condition.
